If we are to be fair in answering this question, then we have to delve into the very beginning and take a quickie ride through the years from the inception to the present. Giving a direct answer will not give real justice to our readers; let us go down memory lane.
It began in 1905 when Harry C. Bunnell then of Westport, New York received a patient for a chair. The objective was to take relaxation outdoors by providing what we enjoy indoors outdoors. There should be the protection of the chairs outdoors against the elements of the weather 365 days in the year and all were included in the design of the first model a decade and 14 years ago.
The first model was constructed with a single piece of wood in a slanted position with broad arms. The emergence of this technology gave birth to the first Westport chair. The headquarters is located in Lake Champlain, South of Montreal, New York . This is where the top Adirondack chairs Mountain is located today.
The narrative we have briefly taken above details the history of the Adirondack chair from its embryo. The spread was fast, the chair found its way to Canada and it was christened: Muskoka chair. The name is in honor of the quintessential cottage district.
Let us now go back to the question above now that you have been taken through history. What is the difference between Adirondack and Cape Cod Chairs? There are no differences at all! It is pure and simple.
Frequent Maintenance of your Wood Adirondack chair is important otherwise it will fade and lose its sheen so after getting your Adirondack Wooden Chair next is to know how to best finish it so as to help prolong its lifespan. You can get yours Here in case you haven’t got yourself one. So while some people dig the faded silver gray look of these chairs, many people don’t. And this is why it’s important to take care of your wooden Adirondack chair. There are a number of means by which you can weatherproof your Adirondack chair and we are going to tell you the top ways to do so.
Best finish for your Adirondack Wooden chairs
Paint Adirondack Wooden Chair Finish
Painting is a great way of finishing your Adirondack chair. Paint tends to block harmful UV rays better than any normal clear finish, hence is preferred by a lot of people. There are several best finish for your adirondack wooden chairs methods available but paint is the most used method. To use the Paint finish method, apply on the chair a high-quality exterior primer and then use a paint that is oil based and before painting the chair, sand it well so that the primer fits well.
Also, paint carefully. Don’t let any part of the chair unfinished. Paint every nook and corner that you can find. Sloppy work looks messy and untidy and you don’t want that. A chair once painted needs to be repainted every couple of years.
Stain Adirondack Wooden Chair Finish
Staining your Adirondack chair not only makes it more attractive but also increases its life considerably. For that first, we need to do the water test. Put two to three drops of water on the chair. If the water beads, there lies a layer on the chair which can prevent your stain from going through.
How to stain your Adirondack Wooden Chair?
Once the water test is completed, choose your favorite stain and a paintbrush. Apply the stain thoroughly on the chair without missing any parts. Stain can change the color of your Adirondack chair i.e lighten or darken the color according to the product you choose. A coat of varnish generally follows the stain application process.
Varnish Adirondack Wooden Chair Finish
If you like the original natural color of your Adirondack chair, opt for clear varnish for the finish. And even though many people believe that varnish is the same as Stain, it clearly isn’t
When applied to the Adirondack wooden chair’s surface and left to dry, it turns into a shiny, hard and clear coating. This coat needs to apply once every couple of years and save your chair from rot, mildew and extreme weather.
Shellac Adirondack Wooden Chair Finish
Another best finish for your Adirondack wooden chairs finish most people use for their Adirondack chairs is shellac. A non-toxic finish, it can be used as a sealer instead of varnish before you stain your chair. But shellac is stained by water and it even gets dissolved by alcohol. So even a few water drops will leave stains on the surface which can only be removed during the next coat application
Refinishing your Adirondack chair
After every couple of years, you need to repaint or restain your Adirondack chairs to continue with the shine. Take the chair outside and clean it thoroughly using a damp cloth. Once cleaned, leave the chair to dry completely. Also, tighten any loose screw or nuts that might have gone loose with time. Sand the chair using medium grit sandpaper. Sand away any rough spot that you might find.
Now if you are repainting your chair, first apply the exterior primer. Once the primer is dried, paint the chair completely without missing even a small part. Apply two coat of the paint. Leave it to dry.
If you restaining your chair, apply two coats of stain and then apply a coat of sealant (varnish or shellac).
How to clean and protect your Adirondack chair?
You can protect your teak Adirondack chairs from rot, mildew, fade, and mold by applying a finish on it. The different types of finish and way of their application have been mentioned in detail above. Also, cover your Adirondack chairs when they are not being used. This will protect them from rain and harmful sun’s UV rays.
When it comes to cleaning your Adirondack chair, not much expertise is needed. Usually rubbing the surface of the chair occasionally with a damp cloth will do the trick. Some chairs come with the instructions to be spot cleaned only, so it’s advised to go through the same before cleaning your Adirondack chair. You can also use a pressure washer to clean your chair nicely once in a week. This will remove any dirt or mud clinging to the chair. Using mild soap and water will also do a good job. Always remember to dry your chair completely before storing them or it can lead to the growth of mold and mildew.

The double Adirondack chair will be a perfect addition to your backyard and quite useful if you do not wish to make or buy two separate Adirondack chairs.
Two 2×6 red cedar lumber which are 8 ft long
Nine 5/4 lumber which are 12 ft long, 5 ½ “ wide and 1” thick
The first step is to individually make the legs of both the Adirondack chairs. There are 2 legs, E (both sides) and G. Cut the legs using a miter saw and then smooth the edges using sandpaper.
Next, we will make the seat slat (C). Do not use lumber pieces which contain large knots as they will weaken your slat. Once you cut the slat, Drill in holes and plugs which are around ¼ inches deep. Using a round over bit on a router table, round the exposed and the top edges of the slats. Attach the seat slat temporarily to the back legs.
For making the lower back rail (A), use a saw and then drill holes for plugs and screws. Remove the seat slat you had attached to the back legs and screw the lower back rail to its position. Attach back the seat slat.
For making the arms (H), take two 5/4 lumber and attach them together using glue. Cut them to the length and then saw the curves. Sand the joints and round them over using round over bit.
It’s time to make the upper back rail (B). Cut it using a bandsaw at 90 degrees and then using a file you have to straighten the flat parts.
Screw the arms to the upper back rail (B). It is here important to note that the screws go from beneath the back rail to go into the arms.
Now the back seat has to be made (D). Cut it using a bandsaw and drill holes for screws and plugs near the lower end of the slat. However, if a bandsaw is not available, you can also make use of a jigsaw.
Assemble the seat by fastening the seat slat and then screw the front legs together to the seat.
Cut two corbel blanks (F). Make sure that both of them fit perfectly right inside the arm. Drill holes for screws through front legs of the chair and screw the corbels to them.
Assemble the back seat slat. And insert plugs in all the holes you made.
Once all the assembly is done and your chair is complete, you can also apply exterior oil finish coat on your chair. You can leave your chair to its natural wood color or paint a bit with any color of your choice. It is important to note that the painting of the chair should only be done after the completion of making the chair.
Just making the chair is both important, you also need to take care of it afterward. Since your Adirondack chair is made of wood, there is a high probability that it might get attacked by pests like termites. For making sure that these pests do not infest your precious chair, there are few precautions you need to take such as don’t let your chair out in open when it’s raining. Pests love moisture and feed on it. Also, polish your chair frequently for that added layer of protection. This will be enough to protect your precious Adirondack chair.

First, we need to build the front legs. Using the miter saw, cut the lumber at 85 degrees. Smooth it using sandpaper for a more refined look. For back legs, cut one at 87 degrees and the other at 67 degrees.
For building the sides, fit the supports to the legs. After aligning the edges, drill holes through those supports and insert 2 ½ inch screws into them. You can also add glue for a more strong frame.
To the front of the chair, fit a 2×4 and at 14 ½” cut through support. At both ends of the side support, drill holes and insert 2 1/2 “ screws. Now attach the slats to the seat of the chair. There should be no gap left between the slats and drill holes at both ends and insert 2 ½” screws.
Now we need to make support for the backrest. At both ends, drill holes and attach them to the back legs using 2 ½ inch screws. Using glue will give it a more professional look. The backrest has to be assembled now. Holes should be drilled to the slats. Now put them on a flat surface, align the edges and fasten them together and insert 2 ½ “ screws in them for assembling.
Now on the frame of the chair fit the backrest and align the edges. Through the backrest support again drill holes and insert 2 ½” screws in the slats. Your chair is now finished.
All left is to add final touches to your 2×4 Adirondack chair. Smooth the surface using sandpaper and fill holes with wood putty. If you wish to paint your chair, do the same. Apply a few coats of the paint for better protection. If you do not wish to paint the chair and go with the natural look, you can also apply a few coats of stain on it.
